Beatrice's story

Growing up in East Africa comes with its own share of problems, but growing up in Kerugoya, Kenya is a real struggle. Beatrice is a single woman who lives with her two children in Kerugoya, a land of seemingly never-ending beauty. She is a forward-looking single mom who has advanced to being one of the most respected women in her village.

Farming is the main economic activity in her village. She is a horticultural and dairy farmer. She works hard because she is unwilling to let her children suffer. Beatrice is seeking a loan of 50,000 KES through Kiva's field partner, Juhudi Kilimo. With this loan she will buy farm inputs such as fertilizer and seeds to enable her to grow more vegetables, reap maximum profits, and increase her business.

Being a woman and accessing funds in Kenya, especially around her village, is very challenging. However, Beatrice feels relieved knowing there are institutions such as Kiva that help enterprising women like herself. She is always working to improve her family’s living conditions, but her biggest dreams are to become independent, to support her family by herself, to secure her children’s future, and to buy a home.
