La Asuncion Ii Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy a variety of yarn and tools for the loom.

La Asuncion Ii Group's story

Sonia is a 25-year-old married woman who participates as president of the Community Bank of Friendship Bridge, La Asuncion II. She is of Mayan descent, Kaqchiquel, and is the mother of 2 children age 2 and 7 years old. Sonia has 4 years of education. Sonia's greatest wish is for her children to attend university in the future. To achieve this goal, she started a textile business 4 years ago. She weaves beautiful huipiles, typical blouses with flower designs. Sonia sells the colorful traditional textiles in her community. She is requesting her 1st loan from Kiva to buy a variety of yarn and tools for the loom.

The 8 women of this communal bank live in the Central Guatemalan Highlands in the cradle of the Kaqchiqueles. They live in a rural community of the Department/State of Chimaltenango. All the women have small textile businesses, sell baby clothes, prepare delicious food, sell firewood and sew sweaters. Because they have little or no formal education, they benefit from monthly educational training. This is part of the Microcredit Plus program: loans, educational training, and health care services. They also acquire information on how to run their business, take care of themselves including women's rights, self-esteem, empowerment and their family such as nutrition, hygiene, health.

Thank you Kiva lenders for helping families in Guatemala improve their businesses, earn income and offer a better future for their children!
