Afua's Group's story

Afua's group is comprised of two hard-working women. Afua is 25 years old and lives in the town of Lyantonde in the Mbarara region of Uganda. She is married and has two children who are currently in school. For the past three years, Afua has been working hard to manage her restaurant, which sells cooked food, green bananas, rice, cassava, meat, chicken, tea, and soda water.

To help expand her business, Afua has requested a share of 3,000,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy food items, green bananas, rice, meat, cooking oil, and cassava, and will help Afua to generate greater profits. Afua will be able realise more profits and, therefore, she will be able to also cater for her family and children, hence improving on their standards of living. Afua hopes that in the future she will be able to take her children to boarding school.

Afua is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
