Bella Vista Sumpango Group's story

A continuing drought and increased climate change are making it difficult for farmers to produce healthy harvests, earn a living and feed their families. This is true in the department/state of Chimaltenango where beans, corn, vegetables and coffee are grown.

Sandra is 30 years old, a farmer, and a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Bella Vista Sumpango” who faces numerous challenges. She is fortunate to have her own plot of land where she, along with her husband, grows beans, corn and squash. Since there is no well on the land, she is able to buy water from a neighbor. She shares,“Our short term goal is to drill our own well.” The couple waters their crops with drip irrigation. Sandra is requesting her 4th Kiva loan to buy fertilizer and insecticide.

Sandra only has one year of formal education and is keenly aware of its value. Her 2 children (12, 13) attend school. Along with the 6 other ladies in the Trust Bank, she participates in monthly educational trainings (business, health, family, and women) designed by a facilitator who uses pictures, games, role playing and diagrams to share the information. Every other month, the women have access to basic health care services. The combination of loans, education and health care services is called “Microcredit Plus”.

Sandra and her friends greatly appreciate participating in the program and accessing credit. Thank you, Kiva investors!
