Maravillosas Group's story

Simona, the President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Maravillosas”, was widowed 22 years ago. She is now 48, remarried and lives in the department/state of Suchitepequez. Simona has a 6th grade education that is more than the other women in the group who have little or none.

Fifteen years ago, Simona opened a business selling delicious regional snack foods and fresh corn tortillas. With her income, she has been able to cover the basic needs of her children including their secondary education.

Simona needs to make some improvements to her shop in order to attract more clients to her “tortilleria”, so she is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy lumber, cement block, sheet metal roofing, cement and nails.

Simona calls the monthly meetings to order and the eight members make loan payments. Then, a facilitator from Friendship Bridge conducts an educational session designed around 4 major topics: business, health, family, women. Because the ladies have little or no formal education, these sessions are vital to their success. Every other month, they have access to basic health care services. Friendship Bridge calls this effective combination of loans, education and health care “Microcredit Plus”. The women appreciate the assistance!

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for the vital role you play in the life of Simona and her friends. They are opening doors to a much brighter future for themselves and their families!
