Cooperativa Apropal's story
This loan may have a higher risk but higher impact. Learn more here. This is the second Kiva Direct-to-Social Enterprise loan for Cooperativa Apropal, based in Peru. View Apropal's first loan profile here. In the Northern Peruvian region of the Amazon rainforest, the drug trade and terrorism threaten livelihoods and economic activity. Rural farmers in the jungle lack access to markets, resulting in widespread poverty and limited financial mobility. In recent years, climate change has reduced yields and disrupted harvests. Cooperativa Apropal is a cooperative social enterprise formed by heart of palm farmers from the Amazon. With membership of over 300 farmers, representing more than 800 hectares of heart of palm cultivation, Apropal owns and operates a processing facility and packaging center, supports organic certification and quality control, and provides access to international markets. Apropal's mission is to improve the quality of life of Amazonian farmers and communities by managing a competitive company that can pay higher wages and provide robust supports. This Kiva loan of $30,000 will allow Cooperative Apropal to improve payment terms for farmers by bridging the gap between its members that need upfront payment and its international buyers that pay three months later.
