Las Campanitas Group's story

Family farms, where poultry and animals like goats, sheep, and cattle are raised, are found in communities throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Often, children begin their working lives on these farms and as adults, continue to have animal husbandry businesses.

This is the history of Ana, a 26-year-old married mother of 3 children (4-11), who is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Campanitas”. She attended school for 4 years and left because her classmates teased her so much. Besides the animal husbandry business, Ana sells prepared food and vegetables. With her income, she is able to help her husband cover educational expenses for her older children. She is requesting her 3rd Kiva loan to buy chickens, pigs and vegetables.

There are 10 ladies in the Trust Bank who are anxious to invest in their animal husbandry and traditional textile businesses. They meet monthly to share stories, make loan payments and participate in educational trainings, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care services. Topics are quite relevant to their lives and the ladies learn about effective business practices, healthy habits, nutrition and hygiene, as well as self-esteem and empowerment. Every other month, a visiting nurse offers them basic free exams like blood pressure checkups and PAP smears.

Ana and her friends in the group are poised to step into a brighter and more prosperous future. Thank you, Kiva investors.
