Affordable Computers & Technology For Tanzania's story
This loan may have a higher risk but higher impact. Learn more here. This is the third Kiva Direct-to-Social Enterprise loan for Affordable Computers and Technology in Tanzania (ACTT). View ACTT's previous loan profile here. In Tanzania, 50% of children that finish primary school can barely read or write in Swahili, let alone English. In rural areas, the teacher-student ratio can be as high as 89:1. Affordable computers and training to build basic skills in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is lacking. As a result, Tanzanian youth are severely disadvantaged in an increasingly competitive, technology-driven global economy. ACTT sells affordable, high-quality refurbished and new computers and operates school support programs and ICT training courses that empower marginalized people in the Moshi and Arusha region near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. ACTT has trained over 6,000 people in basic ICT skills and supported over 250 educational institutions in setting up sustainable computer labs. This Kiva loan of $25,000 will help ACTT to expand to additional locations and distribute more computer hardware and ICT trainings at affordable prices in rural Tanzania.
