A loan helped to buy farm inputs such as certified fertilizers to help improve her tea crop farm.

Calyster's story

Calyster (pictured in her tea crop farm) is a 32-year-old mom of three. She lives in a typical village in the Nyamira area of Kenya, where people suffer from poverty and lack of capital. Most are smallholder farmers. She's been farming on a small, inherited piece of land for a few years. On her farm, she practices mixed farming, selling milk and different crops such as tea, as her sources of income.

Access to modern-quality farm inputs is the pillar of the agricultural revolution. However, in Kenya, a developing country, fertilizer and seed allocation by the government is way below the needs of farmers. Since Juhudi Kilimo, in partnership with Kiva, ventured into the affairs of smallholder farmers in Kenya, farmers can attest that there has been a significant improvement in input availability.

Calyster is requesting a loan to buy farm inputs such as fertilizers to help improve her tea crop farm. Your loan will enable her to improve her crop production through the use of quality farm inputs. This intervention will help her meet the increasing demand for food in the market, and in the process, generate more income to repay the loan debt. She also hopes to improve her house.
