A loan helped to buy farm inputs such as certified seeds and nutrient-rich fertilizer to boost the quality of her produce.

Ann's story

37-year-old Ann is a woman with an unending desire to achieve. She hails from a remote village in the Kerugoya area of Kenya, a remote area located on a gentle plain before the ascent into the central highlands of Kenya. Ann has never shifted her attention away from farming; she has always worked hard to meet her set objectives. She enjoys generating an income by selling her harvest, which makes her feel accomplished. However, Ann finds the cost of farming inputs very high.

In Kenya, agriculture is one of the most competitive industries, due in particular to the high cost of the activities necessary to improve farming, including land acquisition and paying for inputs. To meet the high cost of inputs, farmers have been forced to borrow from financial institutions that sometimes impose very complicated procedures for loan distribution. Some farmers, especially women, end up being disadvantaged.

Ann has taken out this loan to buy farm inputs such as certified seeds and nutrient-rich fertilizer to boost the quality of her produce, earn more profits, and elevate her standard of living. This loan provides an opportunity that she never had before, as her irregular income and lack of collateral security prevented her from accessing a loan at commercial banks.

Thanks to Juhudi Kilimo and Kiva, the lives of Ann and her family will be changed through this loan.
