Candelaria Group's story

Beautiful Guatemalan traditional textiles are internationally known, drawing many tourists to the country, which helps the indigenous Maya survive economically. Silvia, a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank "Candelaria" group, is one of them. She is 23 years old, married, and the mother of a 4-year-old son. The well-known and talented Silvia and her husband weave beautiful "cortes," traditional wrap-around skirts. She is requesting a second Kiva loan to buy a variety of colored threads at the wholesale level.

There are 8 Maya K'iché women in the Trust Bank who live in the Department of Quiché. They are traditional weavers that provide income for their families. Monthly, they attend meetings of the "Microcredit Plus" program of loans, education, and healthcare services. During the educational sessions they learn about good business practices, women's rights, and good hygiene. Bimonthly, the women can see a health professional for exams and screenings.

Silvia and her friends are very grateful for the support of Kiva investors. Thank you!
