Shakirah's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support

A loan helped to purchase more pigs.

Shakirah's story

Shakirah is 22 years old and lives in the town of Lyantonde in the Mbarara region of Uganda. She is married and has one child. For the past five years, Shakirah has been working hard to manage her piggery, which sells pigs.

To help expand her business, Shakirah has requested a loan of 500,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more pigs, and will help Shakirah to generate greater profits. Shakirah will use the profits of the business to assist her husband in paying school fees for their child, buying herself personal items like clothes, paying house bills and providing basic needs for the family like food, thereby improving on their standards of living. Shakirah hopes that in the future she will be able to still operate her business and make more profits.

Shakirah is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
