A loan helped to buy more green bananas, cassava and potatoes.

Phiona's Group's story

Phiona's group is comprised of two hardworking women. Phiona is 19 years old and lives in the town of Wobulenzi in the Luwero region of Uganda. She has one child.

For the past two years, she has been working hard to manage her food stall, which sells fresh food, green bananas, potatoes and cassava.

To help expand her business, Phiona has requested a share of 3,200,000 UGX from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more green bananas, cassava and potatoes, and will help Phiona to generate greater profits.

Business will expand, hence more profits. This will enable Phiona to cater to her family's needs plus her child's, thereby improving on their standards of living.

Phiona hopes that in the future she will be able to open up a beauty salon.

Phiona is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life-skills training.
