El Mar Group's story

The economy of the Department of Sololá is based on agricultural production of corn, beans, coffee and vegetables. Also as an important part is the production of handmade items such as: typical fabrics of cotton, wool, traditional ceramics, and tulle carpets. Most of these products are made by women.

One of these women who produces textiles is Gloria, 25 years old. She is a weaver of “huipiles” blouses and typical “belts” belts. Since these textiles carry many details, Gloria produces 1 typical “huipil” blouse and 4 “belts” belts per month. To obtain other income, she also works as a maid. As Gloria was able to study six years in primary school, she doesn't have the opportunity to get a formal job. With the income obtained, Gloria can cover her own expenses and those of her parents. She is a member of the Community Bank of Friendship Bridge "El Mar", located in the Department (state) of Sololá. To continue expanding the business, she is requesting her second Kiva loan. Gloria will buy yarn and fabrics.

Together with Gloria, there are six other women in the group who attend monthly educational training as part of the "Microcredit Plus" program (loans, education, medical care). Training on finance and investments help women manage their textile businesses and stores for daily consumption. Other areas of impact for them are about women's empowerment, self-esteem, leadership and entrepreneurship.

Loans financed by Kiva lenders are very important. Thank you!
