Beatrice's story

Beatrice is 24 years old and lives in the town of Pallisa in the Iganga region of Uganda. She is married and has three children with one of them currently in school. For the past four years Beatrice has been working hard to manage her fast foods business, which sells cookies.

To help expand her business, Beatrice has requested a loan of 1,200,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy cooking oil, soy beans, a frying pan and packing bags, which will help Beatrice to generate greater profits. Beatrice will use the profits of the business to assist her husband in paying school fees for their children, buying for herself personal items like clothes, paying house bills and providing basic needs for the family like food and medical care thereby improving their standard of living. Beatrice hopes that in the future she will be able to buy a plot of land and build a permanent house.

Beatrice is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
