Mada's story

Mada is 24 years old and lives in the town of Nansana in the Nansana region of Uganda. She is Married and has two children who are all currently in school. For the past three years, Mada has been working hard to manage her retail business, which sells snacks and school bags.

To help expand her business, Mada has requested a loan of 1,000,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more school bags, wheat flour and cooking oil for making snacks, and will help Mada to generate greater profits. Mada will be able realise more profits and therefore be able to cater for her household needs hence improving on their standards of living. Mada hopes that in the future she will be able to buy a plot of land.

Mada is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
