A loan helped to jump start a dreamy new apparel brand and textile collective in Portland, Oregon.

Emily's story

After graduating with my BFA from Oregon College of Art & Craft, it was apparent that there were few career opportunities for textile designers here. Portland is known for NIKE, and Pendelton, but those are massive corporations. We don’t know who their textile designers are or what their inspiration was! I realized Portland needed a fun, bold, textile & apparel brand that is sought after and respected, that gives credit to all artists involved, and tags everyone online so that people feel genuinely connected to the brand. I want Lavender Cloud Collective apparel to appeal to millennials, and to participate in festival culture by vending at music festivals. I grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida. My first look into entrepreneurship was during my apprenticeship with Charlie Parker at the St. Petersburg Clay Company. SPCC was an old train station converted into clay studios and workshop spaces. There was so much inspiration buzzing through the dusty air, and it was the first time I truly became part of a creative community. My mentor, Charlie Parker, was one of three owners, and he worked very hard but always gave back to everyone. He inspired me to be my own boss someday, and to share the arts with all walks of life.
