Melanie's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support

A loan helped restock inventory for my relaunch, boost marketing and purchase promotional merchandise.

Melanie's story

I've wanted to be an entrepreneur since I was a little girl. I grew up in inner city Cleveland with my two younger siblings. My mother, who is schizophrenic, raised me and my siblings on a fixed income. She could not keep a steady job because of her mental illness, but she managed to take good care of us regardless of her shortcomings. Growing up poverty stricken was definitely tough but I had a resilience in me at a young age. Despite shortcomings, I actually really enjoyed my childhood. My brother, sister, and I had a loving mother who took great care of us, a place to call home, food to eat and we had each other. Although my childhood was stable, having so little triggered my entrepreneurial instincts. At a very young age, I began to brainstorm ideas of how I could make money. When I was nine years old, sometimes I would take the few dollars my mom would give me for snacks to the penny candy store up the street. I bought candy that I sold during recess in school the next day. Today, I work in banking. I am a banker for a small savings and loan in Cleveland, Ohio. My dream is to have a business financially stable enough for me to work for myself full time.
