Barrio 3 Group's story

The 7 Maya “Kaqchikel” ladies who are members of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Barrio 3” live near the magnificent Lake Atitlan. They proudly wear their stunning colorful traditional textiles every day.

Esther, a 37 year old married member of the group, is an artisan who embroiders these beautiful pieces of clothing with stars and geometric figures. She is able to deliver 6 blouses or huipiles each month. She sets aside some of her income for the continuing education of her two teenage children (13,17) who are in the 6th and 9th grades. Esther is requesting a Kiva loan to buy cones of thread, embroidery patterns and fabric.

The “Microcredit Plus” program includes education, health services, and various loan products that allow for increased and dependable cash flow. This enables Esther and her friends to empower themselves and build better lives. Their monthly educational training is relevant to their lives and the ladies learn about effective business management practices, nutrition, health, hygiene and women’s roles/rights. Often, they share what they learn with family members and friends. Every other month, they have access to preventative health services.

Kiva lenders, partnering with Friendship Bridge, are highly appreciated by Esther and her friends. Thank you!
