Nueva Esperanza Group's story

Natalia is 66 years old and lives in the Pacific Coast department of Suchitepéquez. She is the treasurer of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank Nueva Esperanza Group. She has been a widow for 16 years, supporting four children over the age of 18 and also is the grandmother of 11.

Before her husband died, he had worked hard to provide an education for his children which led to their receiving accounting and secretarial degrees.

Natalia has been in the business of preparing chocolate for 15 years and in addition, has a tortilleria, grinding corn, and sells clothes. She sells her products from her home as well as from door to door. She is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy chocolate-making ingredients (:cocoa, sugar, cinnamon), as well as corn and beans.

Nueva Esperanza Group has seven Spanish speaking members who meet monthly to make loan payments and to participate in educational sessions as a part of the Microcredit Plus program of loans, education and healthcare services. The women, who weave skirts, sell shoes, clothes, chocolate, or grind corn, appreciate gaining business management skills, like budgeting, saving and investing to grow successful businesses.

Natalia shares that without a formal education, she has learned about business development that includes needing to be responsible and punctual. She also feels it is important to have several businesses to generate more income.

Thank you, Kiva investors, for supporting Natalia's desire for business growth and more income!
