Virgen Maria Group's story

Generation after generation families, from the youngest to the oldest, work in the style of their ancestors creating handmade products that we can now experience throughout the world. This art is an expression of culture of its people, it is an individual work of art printed with the soul of the creator.

Isabel, a member of the Community Bank of Friendship Bridge "Virgen Maria", is a craftswoman who produces beautiful textiles.

She is 38 years old, single and lives with her mother in the rural area of the Department (state) of Sololá. To support the household expenses and take care of her mother, Isabel started her own business. She embroiders and weaves typical blouses, besides selling traditional clothes. Isabel is requesting her 1st Kiva loan to buy new clothing styles such as “cuts” skirts, “huipiles” skirts and typical aprons.

There are 7 women in the communal bank who are proud to be Maya K’iche. Despite not having formal education, they are moving towards development thanks to textile businesses. In monthly training, they empower themselves. This month they learn about good business practices. Other important issues are about family, women and health. Every 2 months, women have access to health care services, all provided free of charge. This is part of the "Microcredit Plus" loan, education and medical care program.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for your generosity in financing these loans!
