Juan's story

My name is Juan Carlos Dueweke-Perez. I am an immigrant from Guadalajara who came to Detroit in 1999, as a child. Throughout my life, I have had the privilege of lack: lack of education, lack of language, lack of family. And all that lack is important because it gave me the spirit and curiosity to seek more. Being undocumented and without access to higher education, I became a professional photographer by mentorship, reading, and practice. I also became a social entrepreneur who has been able to serve folx who oftentimes are not served in a significant way, including the creation of Southwest Detroit Restaurant Week. I've also used my voice to advocate for other immigrants, break down stereotypes, and challenge the biases within minority groups. Among my other identities, I am a husband, father, friend, futurist, and a bug collector.
