Maria Florinda's story

Montecristi stands out because of its handicrafts made from straw, wicker, piquigua [another tropical plant fiber], and wood. Fine hats made of straw are known throughout the world as "Panama hats" and are recognized within and outside of the country.

Maria is 70 years old. She is married and has six children, all adults and independent. Her husband had a heart operation and does not work. A granddaughter who is studying at the university lives with them. They live in their own house.

Maria and one of her daughters sell various clothing for women, men, and children. They buy it from the various distributors in Guayaquil and Guaquillas. They buy monthly, depending on the orders of their customers. They deliver the merchandise to bazaars, shops, and individuals. They leave it on credit and collect weekly.

With this new loan, she will buy a computer for her granddaughter, who is studying at the university and needs to do assignments and consultations online, thus she will obtain good grades.

Her dream is that her granddaughter will become a professional.
