Las Trabajadoras Group's story

One woman empowered through the Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program means that an average of six other people also benefit. This could include family and community members.

Martina, a young women in the Friendship Bridge trust bank “Las Trabajadoras,” employs six people in her traditional textile workshop. She weaves traditional wraparound woven skirts or “cortes.” She shares, “I sell my skirts in two nearby community markets with the goal of creating more income.”

Martina is 24 years old, is single, and lives with her parents and four siblings. She has a large order and needs to buy lots of thread to weave more “cortes.” Martina is requesting her third Kiva loan to buy thread in various colors.

There are seven Maya K'iche ladies in the group, and they live in the department/state of Quiche. It’s an area well known for colorful traditional textiles. Several women in the trust bank have textile businesses, while others have farms raising poultry and pigs. Most of the women have little or no formal education. Martina was lucky to go to school through the sixth grade.

At their monthly meetings, the ladies participate in educational training that covers an aspect of four subjects: business, health, family, and women. Every other month, they have access to health care services. The loans, educational training, and health care services are the extras in the “Microcredit Plus” program of the organization.

Thank you, Kiva lenders! These women are opening doors to a brighter future with your help!
