Las Mariposas Santiago Group's story

There are many talented ladies in Guatemala who make beautiful and colorful beaded jewelry of all kinds. Maria is one of these women and lives on the shores of the magnificent Lake Atitlan in the Western Highlands. She is 36, married and the mother of two children, ages two and 13).

Maria's husband paints houses and doesn’t earn enough to cover all the expenses of the family. Maria makes beaded earrings and keychains. Some of her income is set aside for the continuing education of her oldest son. Right now, Maria is requesting her 1st Kiva loan to buy a large quantity of beads in various sizes and colors.

Maria is one of seven Maya Tz'utujil women in the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank group, “Las Mariposas Santiago”. They have an average of four years of formal education. The ladies meet monthly to support each other, make loan payments, and to participate in relevant educational trainings designed to empower them with information about business, family, women and health. Every other month, the ladies have access to health care services. The effective combination of loans, educational trainings and health care services is called, “Microcredit Plus”.

The partnership between Kiva and Friendship Bridge is especially appreciated by Maria and her friends in the Trust Bank. They are poised to step into a brighter future, benefiting themselves, their families and their community near the shores of Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.
