Julia's story

Throughout my career I‘ve been a teacher. I’m fascinated with the process of transferring knowledge and experience from one brain to another – whether that knowledge is running a housing coop, painting windows, or performing mathematics. My can-do disposition was really put to the test when I had to stop teaching high school because the symptoms of my genetic disease became so severe that I could no longer work full-time with a fixed schedule. At first all I could do was reel and cry! I had to do so many things that I had no idea how to do. I started doing what I knew: reciting mantras and affirmations, making lists, designing systems. Along the way I had many people say to me, “You’re so systematic. You should write a book” I took stock of what I knew and liked. The first thing that came to mind was baking cookies. I started a cookie dough company that allowed me to share my gifts, while setting my own hours. Anyhow cookies cheered me up, as they do for many. Over the years, I kept returning to the idea of a book. I worked it and worked it. A book wasn’t the final answer, but it was a start. Sharp Turn Institute is the fulfillment of my dream. I will keep looking for ways teach others to care for their emotional health while going through life altering transitions. No one's experience should be as hard as mine was.
