Anthony's story

I grew up in the Avondale community in Chattanooga, TN, and my uncle taught me how to play chess when I was out hurt from playing sports. During that time, I realized that I had to have another option other than sports for my future. So playing chess was the turning point that let me know that sports might not be attainable because my uncle related chess to life and the decisions you make that dictate what happens in life, whether good or bad. I ended up channeling my anger and my energy into chess and it gave me hope. I chose to establish Kingship Chess Academy solely for the purpose of offering our kids and young adults alternatives to basketball, football, and baseball. The harsh truth is that all kids participating in these sports will not make it successfully to the pros. I want my chess program to not only build character but also to enhance the intellectual aspects of the lives of the participants. As chess is a game that encompasses character building, decision making, etiquette, and the use of cognitive brain skill.
