A loan helped a single mom to gain access to high-quality fertilizer for her tea crop's cultivation.
Ruth's story
Ruth is 39 years old, single and the mother of two children. She lives in the Nyamira area of Kenya. Those who know Ruth describe her as a very hardworking and determined person. She is motivated by the wish to give her family a good life.
Ruth is a crop farmer. She earns her income from selling milk and crops at her local market. The quality of Ruth’s tea crops, however, has dwindled due to the use of poor farm inputs. This has brought about low demand for her crops and has negatively impacted her sales.
Access to modern-quality farm inputs is the pillar of Kenya’s agricultural revolution. However, in a developing country such as Kenya, fertilizer and seed allocation by the government is way below the needs of farmers. This being the case, Ruth has requested a loan to buy good farming inputs such as high-quality fertilizer to boost the value of her tea crops.
Since Juhudi Kilimo, which is in partnership with Kiva, ventured into the affairs of smallholder farmers in Kenya, farmers can attest that there has been a significant improvement in inputs’ availability. Ruth is assured of a bumper tea harvest, which will open new markets for her crops and, subsequently, increase her profits.
This loan will improve Ruth’s standards of living, as well as that of her beautiful children. Her dream is to continue farming and establish a big agribusiness farm.
