A loan helped to buy more livestock, like chickens and turkeys, as well as fruits and vegetables.

Nueva Cucabaj Group's story

Women have become the backbone of the rural economy, and in recent decades they have expanded their participation in agriculture. As a result they obtain financial resources to provide what is necessary for families.

For Gisela, 33, it is vital to maintain these agricultural businesses and instill in her family the importance of having various options to generate income. She is a member of the Community Bank of Puente de Amistad “Nueva Cucabaj”. Gisela is a married woman, who studied for a technical career and received a Baccalaureate. She is the mother of 5 children (3 to 14 years old); three of them receive formal education. Due to lack of employment, she decided to generate her own income through the poultry breeding business, and the sale of fruit and vegetables. Gisela requests a 3rd loan from Kiva to buy chickens, turkeys, plus fruit and vegetables.

Gisela and 7 other Maya K’iche women from the Department of Quiché form the “Nueva Cucabaj” Community Bank. They raise poultry, sell fruit and vegetables, sew clothes and make textiles. For Gisela and the rest of her classmates, it is necessary to participate in educational training, as part of the small loans, training and health services program "Microcredit Plus". In each training, they learn about their health, business, family and themselves. They share this information with family and neighbors.

Thank you Kiva lender for financing these much needed loans for these women!
