Birds have been domesticated for thousands of years for family consumption. At present, the population has seen that through the sale of these animals they can generate income. Maricela, 33, is dedicated to this business, who lives in a rural area of the Department (state) of Sololá. She is of K'iche ’Mayan descent and had the opportunity to obtain an assistant nurse diploma.

Although Maricela has a higher education, it has been difficult to find a job. For this reason four years ago, she decided to open her own chicken raising and selling business. Maricela has the desire to vary the business. For this reason she requests the first Kiva loan to buy chickens and pigs.

Maricela is a member of the Community Bank of Puente de Amistad “Sector Pasac”, in the Department (state) of Sololá. The women in his group are Maya K’iche ’and sell traditional costumes, raise animals (chickens, pigs), attend convenience stores, and sell vegetables. They learn how to manage their businesses (budget, investment, savings) through the monthly educational trainings that are part of the "Microcredit Plus" program of Puente de Amistad. They also learn about healthy practices, family, and women's issues. Maricela shares: "The issue of nutrition and hygiene helps me to have a clean house and business."
