A loan helped to buy the latest styles of traditional clothing to resell!

Del Futuro Group's story

For hundreds of years, young Maya girls have sat by their mothers learning to weave and embroider. Or, they have worked alongside their fathers on small farms or in family businesses. They often have no formal education.

Petrona is one of these women who learned to weave as a child. She is now 56 years old, married and has worked hard so that her six children could have a more prosperous and educated future. They are now over the age of 21.

Petrona sells her clothing in the local market in the department/state of Solola where she lives. She is requesting her second Kiva loan to buy the latest styles of “huipiles” or blouses, “cortes” or wrap around skirts”, “delantales” or aprons and “fajas” or belts at the wholesale level.

Petrona is one of seven Maya K’iche ladies in the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Del Futuro”. The women make/sell traditional textiles and shoes. They are also seamstresses, operate hardware stores and convenience stores. Because they often lack formal education, they benefit greatly from their monthly educational trainings, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care services. These trainings, designed by a Facilitator, cover an aspect of four subjects: business, health, family, women. The ladies participate in games and role playing to learn about these topics. Or, they see pictures and diagrams.

Kiva lenders, partnering with Friendship Bridge, are highly valued by Petrona and her friends. Thank you!
