Irene M.'s Group's story

These are teachers at a primary school in Waterloo, a small town where 'Shine on Sierra Leone' has partnered with SMT to start a branch. This will be the second loan this group of teachers is applying for from Kiva lenders through SMT. Their previous SMT/Kiva loan has made a significant impact in the lives of these borrowers. School staff from this institution, like many other schools' staff within SMT’s operational areas, comes to SMT to apply for loans. With the help of these loans, they can accomplish certain tasks that they would otherwise not have been able to accomplish with their mere salaries alone. But with the help of this loan, some can pay school fees for their children; others can use the loan to buy pieces of furniture, a plot of land, house-building materials, or invest in business. At the end of each month, these teachers can repay the loan out of their monthly salaries. The institution’s bursar is directly responsible for deducting the repayment and pays SMT on their behalf. Irene M. C. (back row, 2nd from right) is the head teacher at the school. She was born in Waterloo, 20 miles from Freetown. She is age 50, married with 4 children. Two of her children are now grown-ups, one is in college, and the other is in Junior Secondary School III (JSS III). She has been a head teacher at this school for over 6 years now. Irene wants to expand her business by investing this loan in it. She sells cigarettes, sugar, soft and hard drinks, rice, milk, cocoa, butter, Ovaltine and so on. With the loan, she will buy these items wholesale to add to her current stock.
