I’m an immigrant from Trinidad and Tobago. Throughout most of my pre-USA life, track and field played a domineering role. Most Trini athletes adhere to a strict training regiment, but my pops was also my coach, so track followed us to the grocery store, the kitchen, and everywhere in-between. The disciplined diet allowed me to perform at a high level, but as is all-too-common, the moment I was an ocean away from coach’s watchful eye, I did the exact opposite of what I had been told to do. And so began a college campaign comprised of the most unhealthy eating I ever bore witness to. Post-college, it took some time around the right people in New York for me to regain the discipline needed for healthy eating. With proper nutrition, much of the brainfog I didn’t even know I had receded. I had received a firsthand lesson on the impact diet could have on one’s cognition (most insidiously – without the subject even knowing). Since then, I decided I was going to prioritize CONSISTENT healthy eating for myself. Now, I’m on a quest to get others to do the same.
