Santa Rosa Group's story

The people living in the State of Quiché have businesses related to agriculture, traditional textiles, and handicrafts. Santos knows the importance of consuming basic grains as part of a balanced diet. For this reason, she manages a business of buying and selling beans and corn. This Mayan woman who speaks K’iche is a member of the Communal Bank named “Santa Rosa”. Santos is 29 years old, married, and has four children who range in age from 2 to 12. She comes from a poor family, so she did not have the opportunity to get an education. Santos sells her products from her home and by visiting the homes of her neighbors. The income she generates helps to cover household expenses. Santos is proud to send three of her children to school. She is requesting her second Kiva loan to buy corn and beans in bulk and in different colors (yellow, white, and black).

There are seven Maya K’iche women in this group. They live in the State of Quiché and attend the monthly Communal Bank meetings in which they submit payments on their loans and participate in educational seminars. Since the members have no formal education, the training seminars are vital to their success. The members learn about four specific topics: business, health, family, and women’s issues.

Almost 75% of the population within the State of Quiché lives near or below the poverty line. With the help of the Kiva lenders and Friendship Bridge, Santos and her fellow group members will be able to achieve a better life for themselves and their families. They thank you for your contributions!
