El Rosario Sacatepequez Group's story

Cookies, pies, cakes and other delicious confections are made in every country around the world. In the department of Sacatepequez in Guatemala, Ruth has a business making these sweet items that are quite popular with both young and old in her area.

She is 32 years old, married and the mother of 3 children who between the ages of 4 to 12. She is the treasurer of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “El Rosario Sacatepequez”. Ruth is requesting her 2nd Kiva loan to buy a mixer, as well as ingredients for her recipes including eggs, sugar and flour. Some of her income will be set aside for the education of her children.

Ruth, as Treasurer of her Trust Bank, keeps track of the monthly repayments of the loans. Each month, the group participates in an educational training that covers an aspect of 4 topics: business, health, women, family.

Ruth shares: “I have benefited greatly from the advanced training that I participated in about decorating cakes. Now, my business is more popular than ever!”

Every other month, the ladies have access to basic health care services to get checkups and learn about family planning. Friendship Bridge calls the combination of loans, education, health care and advanced training services “Microcredit Plus”.

Thank you, Kiva investors, for learning about Ruth and her friends and for funding their loans. Their flower, traditional textile and sweet confectionary businesses will grow because of your generosity!
