Mujeres Activas Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy a large quantity of thread to fill increasing orders of traditional belts.

Mujeres Activas Group's story

Traditional Guatemalan clothing is an explosion of color and designs. It is admired by travelers and textile lovers from around the world. Marcela is a 34-year-old married mother of 4 children (4-12) and a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres Activas”. She weaves elaborate traditional belts called “fajas”.

Marcela employs 8 women so that 6 dozen “fajas” can be delivered twice each month. She shares, “I feel very happy seeing how my business has grown and that I am able to give other women the opportunity to earn income.” Marcela is requesting a Kiva loan to buy a large quantity of high-quality thread.

Marcela, along with 7 other Maya K’iche members of “Mujeres Activas”, looks forward to monthly meetings. The ladies offer each other support, make loan payments and participate in educational trainings, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care services. They learn about how to care for their families best (nutrition, hygiene, health), manage their businesses (budget, plan, invest) and empower themselves (self esteem, women’s rights/roles).

Marcela and her friends are poised to step into brighter futures because of their determination, hard work, along with the support of Kiva investors and Friendship Bridge. Thank you, Kiva investors, for your kindness in funding these essential loans!
