Perlas Preciosas De Dios Group's story

Like many women throughout the world, the seven ladies in the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Perlas Preciosas de Dios” group, located in Quetzaltenango, often work at more than one business. Rosa, a member of the group, is one of them. She is 50 years old, has three children (aged 15-22), and sets aside some of her income for their continuing education. In the morning, she sells clothing and in the afternoon, becomes a cook in a local restaurant. Rosa is currently requesting her second Kiva loan to buy sweaters, pants and aprons to expand her inventory.

Rosa has nine years of formal education that is far more than most of the ladies have, who are participating in the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care services. The average client with Friendship Bridge has 3-4 years of formal education and often cannot read nor write. At the monthly meetings, Rosa and the six other ladies in the group participate in educational training designed by a facilitator who uses pictures, diagrams, games and role playing to share the information. Topics are useful and drawn from four areas: health, family, women, and business. The business topic helps the women with their food, clothing, personal care and hair styling businesses. Another member rents rooms out in her home.

Thank you, Kiva investors, for the essential role you play in the lives of Rosa and her friends! They are poised to step into a more prosperous future!
