Esther's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support

A loan helped to buy another productive dairy cow to help this humble widow increase her milk production and make more profits to support her children.

Esther's story

Meet Esther, a widow with three children under her care. With no one to share day-to-day responsibilities of feeding her children and making important family decisions, Esther (a repeat borrower) ventured into farming. On her farm, she has dairy cows, sheep, goats and a small garden. Filled with determination to better her family's conditions while not being deterred by her age and marital status, Esther has decided to expand her existing farm.

Two of her three children are in school, making her personal and financial obligations to skyrocket. Esther wants to make more profit by increasing her milk production. To increase milk production, she can either buy more cows or replace the existing cows with more productive breeds. The latter makes more economic sense. Crossbreeds and Frisians are more productive, and can survive in the same environment as the traditional breeds, but come at a higher price. Esther is seeking a loan from Kiva lenders to purchase another productive dairy cow, which will bring her more income and improve her milk vending business. She will use the additional income to pay for her children's education and meet family expenses. Unlike most micro-finance organizations in Kenya that have imposed very complicated procedures in funds acquisition, thereby discouraging smallholder farmers, Juhudi Kilimo is working closely with Kiva to make loan acquisition for smallholder farmers easy and convenient.
