Magin's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped Expand my business by renovating and opening a new room next door to my current space, allowing me to cultivate more programs and serve a wider range of clientele.

Magin's story

I was born in New York but my parents quickly left for California, where my father pursued his MFA in painting. I grew up in artist studios and art classrooms, and was extremely lucky to be surrounded by makers and collaborators throughout my life. When I returned to New York for college, it was originally for theater, and I spent nearly a decade working with different groups of people, creating and sharing original work. When I discovered teaching and community-based art, I realized that all that time in the theater lent itself beautifully to the energetic and organizational challenges of running a classroom or a large-scale project. Now, living in a beautiful and diverse neighborhood in Queens, I see endless possibilities to connect, share and learn from my neighbors. I hope to deepen the roots I am making here and to learn and grow with the community. Our neighborhood, and indeed, New York itself, is being changed and overtaken by the negative effects of gentrification. As a new member of the community I aim to be a part of positive change and I am proud that my business serves as a central space where people from different backgrounds can come together, engage in dialogue, collaborate on creative projects, and watch their children thrive.
