Patricia's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support

A loan helped to buy quality farming inputs, such as certified seeds and nutrient-rich fertilizers, which she plans to use on her farm to improve her production in 2019.

Patricia's story

Patricia (a 45-year-old mom of three school-going children) is a truly hard-working woman, residing in Kitui, Kenya. Kitui is a remote area, characterized by mud houses, filthy roads, poor power connections, and high levels of women and youth unemployment.

Although Patricia has been staying in this neighborhood for the past few years, she has risen up to become the community’s well-known, hard-working, smallholder farmer. Thanks to her daily efforts, she has managed to give her family a solid reputation.

Patricia has a farm where she grows crops and raises livestock. She also earns some income from a personal business. She never had a formal education, and is content with the farming lifestyle.

The Kitui area is a favourable one for farming, so she is seeking a 20,000 KES loan through Kiva's field partner, Juhudi Kilimo, to buy farm inputs, such as fertilizer and seeds, to enable her to grow more crops, reap maximum profits, and increase her business.

Being a woman and accessing funds in Kenya, especially around her area, is very challenging. Patricia feels relieved knowing there are institutions, such as Kiva, that help enterprising women like herself.
