A loan helped to invest in a bulk purchase of soapstone and bring on additional artisans at his workshop.

Gulam's story

Gulam is an artisan from India who specializes in soapstone candleholders and home decor. He would like to invest in a bulk purchase of soapstone and bring on additional artisans at his workshop. Gulam has been selling through NOVICA since 2004. This is his story:

Gulam comes from a family with a long relationship with the art of sculpting marble.

"I became interested in this rich work and started helping my father in his work. He was honored with the State Award for Excellence in marble sculpting in 1979. After working with my father for a long time, I ventured out on my own. I experimented with different designs and gave a new dimension to the traditional styles. I have been honored with a State Award for Excellence in marble handicrafts.

"As I am growing old. I cannot travel again and again to buy stone in small quantities. That becomes difficult and more expensive, too. With this loan, I'll be able to buy more stone and also hire more artisans to work with me. This will be an opportunity for me to keep my craft and earnings alive."
