Pera 2 Group's story

Margarita is 61 years old and she is her parents' fourth child. Her father died when she was 7, and a short time later her mother died. She thanks God that she is living. She suffered greatly because of the loss of her parents and she could not study.

She married at the age of 18, had her first child when she was 20 and she now has 7 children. With her husband they managed to give them a good living and the opportunity to study.

She got information about the Chajulense Association of Women United for Life because her daughter-in-law told her about the loan opportunities they offered and she invested her first loan in buying and selling used güipils. She became aware that it was a good business activity and this year she will get her fifth laon, which she will invest in her business of selling used güipils, that now she sells in different locations.

Margarita is the leader of Las Peras 2, the group is composed of six women, all are from the Ixil Maya ethnicity. The group will use this loan for textiles (50%), manufacturing (17%) and retail (33%). On average, each member of the group has 5 children. The average age of the members of the group is 49 years old, 83% are illiterate, and 17% did not complete their primary level education.
