A loan helped to buy more fresh varieties of food like maize flour, green bananas, and beans, and also saucepans, plates and a fridge.

Assiyah's story

Assiyah is 21 years old and lives in the town of Matugga in the Kawempe region of Uganda. For the past three years, Assiyah has been working hard to manage her restaurant, which sells cooked food and soft drinks.

To help expand her business, Assiyah has requested a loan of 2,000,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more fresh varieties of food like maize flour, green bananas, and beans, and also saucepans, plates and a fridge. This will help Assiyah to generate greater profits and improve her family's standards of living by providing them with enough food. Assiyah hopes that in the future she will be able to buy a plot of land and build rentals to add on to her earnings.

Assiyah is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life-skills training.
