A loan helped to buy cassava and green bananas.

Irene's story

Irene is 20 years old and lives in the town of Kiyinda in the Kiyinda region of Uganda. For the past two years, Irene has been working hard to manage her food stall, which sells fresh food: green bananas and cassava.

To help expand her business, Irene has requested a loan of 1,000,000 UGX from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy cassava and green bananas, and will help Irene to generate greater profit, and business will expand. Therefore, Irene will be able to meet the basic needs at home, thereby improving their standards of living. Irene hopes that in the future she will be able to buy land for agricultural purposes.

Irene is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
