A loan helped to buy more chickens, pigs and a steer.

Semeja Tercero Group's story

Manuela, a 31-year-old married mother of 4 children, aged 3-8, wakes up each morning to get them ready for their day’s activities. Her 2 older children attend school. Then she goes out to her small yard where she raises chickens, pigs and cattle. It is important to her to contribute to the household expenses and she needs to work at her animal husbandry business to make this happen. Right now, she is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy chickens, pigs and a steer.

Manuela understands the tremendous value of a good education. She was only able to go to school for 6 years. However, at the monthly meetings, she continues to learn, along with the other 7 Maya K’iche ladies in her Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Semeja Tercero”. Business tools like planning, budgeting, investing and savings help the ladies manage their animal husbandry and farming businesses. Topics like effective health and hygiene practices as well as good nutritional habits help them effectively care for their families. They empower themselves as they learn about women’s rights/roles/violence against women and how their bodies work. Every other month, they have access to basic health care services. Friendship Bridge calls the combination of loans, education and healthcare services “Microcredit Plus”.

Thank you, Kiva investors, for your generosity with these ladies! They are opening the door to a brighter and more successful tomorrow!
