A loan helped purchase all new beekeeping materials and equipment for my farm.
Aloha! I am David Kulaga. I live on Hawaii’s Big Island. I am married and have five beautiful children. We moved here two years ago by what I believe was the grace of God. We came out to this island to help with local church ministries with any needs/building projects. To do it as a family, we had to leave behind our life on the mainland. We also desire to support ourselves in ministry and try not to depend on church support. So, I started a small handyman business and picked up construction jobs to get by. I found beekeeping, in particular, to perhaps be what we were looking for, and it was so fascinating to me after seeing a yard of hives on my friend’s property. It really sparked my interest on the wonder and complexity of bees, how important they are to the world, and how this island is a great environment to raise bees. We can produce great quality honey all year and you can actually make a living doing so. We love the delicious taste and health benefits of honey, and what we produce locally here can be enjoyed worldwide. We ventured into the business this year to produce honey at a commercial scale. It feels great to contribute to the healthy and environmentally conscious culture of Hawaii by producing awesome raw local honey here, and also to be a part of the local economy. It’s also great that this business has the potential not just to provide for our family, but to fuel our ministry as well. I am looking forward to see this business thrive together with my family and hopefully pass knowledge that I learn from this noble trade down to my children and many others one day.
