Glenn's story

My life is proof that where and how you grew up doesn’t determine your life’s path. I was youngest child to a single mom who worked 2-3 jobs to support me and my older sister. Due to her work schedule I was often left alone, with family or neighbors who didn’t always speak or treat me the best. These experiences often left me feeling unloved, unwanted, and unprotected. In the 6th Grade I was presented with an opportunity that, at the time, I didn’t realize would change my life. I joined band and for the first time I felt seen, accepted, and loved. Even now, 25+ years later, I still stay in touch with my band friends from middle school and high school. In my home, college was never talked about-only expectation was to finish high school. Because of my High School Band Director, Chorus Teacher and our student intern, I auditioned for several college band directors that came to our school my junior year in high school. I never entertained the idea of a college education because I struggled academically in high school and felt I wasn’t smart enough. When I auditioned again in my senior year, I was awarded a scholarship on the spot by Bethune-Cookman College, Hampton University, Jackson State University, Florida Memorial University and Florida A&M University. As an active band member, I have travel to 12 of the 50 States, performed on national television, recorded several albums, and perform with world-renowned musicians. My musical talent has helped me secure the funding to earn a bachelor’s and finance my master’s degree. Music opened an endless world of possibilities for me and now, with your help, I can inspire our youth to show them that this can be their path as well.
