This loan may have a higher risk but higher impact. Learn more here. Problem Indonesian cocoa farmers make a low income on their cacao harvests due to volatile prices, and lack of knowledge of good agricultural practices, which leads to low farm productivity. Solution Krakakoa is an award-winning bean-to-bar chocolate company in Indonesia that empowers smallholder farmers. They provide training to cocoa farmers in order to increase the quantity and quality of their harvest. Farmers are trained in sustainable farming techniques, disease management and fermentation practices. Farmers are also equipped with the tools they need to farm and process their cocoa. The selected high-quality beans are purchased by Krakakoa at a fix price, which is around double of current world market price. This gives the farmers security and increased incentive to actively improve the farming practice leading to higher incomes. You can find videos of their work here and here Loan Use This loan supports Krakakoa’s next stage of growth. The funds will be used to provide farmers on the Indonesian of islands Sumatra and Sulawesi with up-to-date post-harvest infrastructure such as fermentation boxes, drying racks, and storage rooms. Krakakoa will also use the funds to pre-finance the cacao harvest, and implement software to track farm management and full traceability for beans purchased.
