Fatuma's Group's story

Fatuma's group is comprised of two hardworking women. Fatuma is 20 years old and lives in the town of Kabuusu in the Makindye region of Uganda. She is married and has one child who is currently in school. For the past three years, Fatuma has been working hard to manage her catering business, which sells fast food.

To help expand her business, Fatuma has requested a share of a loan of 2,950,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more baking flour, cooking oil and other items to support the business, and will help Fatuma to generate greater profits and improve on her family standards of living by provding them enough food. Fatuma hopes that in the future she will be able to open up another catering outlet and also support her child with enough basic needs.

Fatuma is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
