Luz De Vida 1 Group's story

Catarina is 51 years old. Her childhood was very difficult. Her father died and her mother did everything possible to feed her and her siblings. Catarina could only study to third grade. Early in her life she had to work to help her mother. Catarina is now the single mother of eight children.

Catarina has obtained four loans from Chajulense Association of Women United for Life. She has used the credit for doing different kinds of business activities: expanding her grocery store, buying thread for selling and for weaving, and buying and selling bananas. She has found a way to sell many things. With this year's credit, she will continue expanding her grocery store, buying plastic products, thread, and bananas.

Catarina is the leader of Luz de Vida 1, a group formed by six women all from the Ixil Maya ethnicity. The group will use their loan for textiles (83%) and agriculture (17%). On average, each member of the group has five children. The average age of the members is 52 years old, 83% are illiterate, and 17% did not finish their primary education.
